Shirou Sanada

In the Yamato series, Sanada is an earnest and dedicated science officer who frequently saves the ship from destruction with his ideas. He has bionic limbs due to a childhood accident that killed his sister and left him resentful of science's arrogance. He was classmates with Mamoru Kodai and feels guilty for not repairing the Yukikaze properly before it went into battle. As acting captain, Sanada provides advice and is the elder spokesperson for the crew after Okita and Tokugawa's deaths. His Japanese name comes from real-life daimyo Sanada Masayuki, and in 2199 he serves as the XO (Executive Officer) to Captain Juuzou Okita. In the 2199 remake, Sanada is the First Officer of the Yamato and does not mention his bionic limbs. Unlike the original series, where he blamed himself for the repair work on the Yukikaze, in 2199, Sanada feels guilty for not informing Mamoru Kodai that Operation M was a suicide mission to distract the Gamilas.
