Chuck and Ash faced off in a battle for a Storm Badge. Ash employed Pikachu, who unfortunately lost to Chuck's Poliwrath. Later, Ash used Bayleef, who defeated both Poliwrath and Machoke. It was later discovered that Brawly, the Dewford Town Gym Leader, had previously been one of Chuck's students. Initially, he trained for a battle with Wayne in his first appearance. However, after finding his sandbags and Wayne's jacket slashed, he became suspicious and met Suicune. With assistance from Wayne, Brawly determined that the cause of the jacket and sandbags was Suicune. Despite attempts to capture it with Wayne, previous Gym Leaders such as Clair had also tried unsuccessfully.
