Kouya is an orphan who was abandoned by his impoverished mother at a young age. He was raised by a youma named Okii-no, who called him Chiisai-no (little one). When he met Rokuta as children, Enki revealed that he wished to travel to Hourai, believing it to be a peaceful land and hoping to find his mother. Rokuta gave Kouya the name Kouya, meaning midnight, since they had met at midnight. To remember this new name, Kouya asked Okii-no to call him by it and began referring to Okii-no as Rokuta. Later, Kouya encountered Atsuyu, the governor of Ens Baku Province, who welcomed him with apparent kindness. In return for his loyalty, Atsuyu provided Kouya with a place to live and a formal education. As a result, Kouya became involved in Atsuyus attempt to overthrow Shouryuu, the King of En, one hundred years into his reign. When Atsuyu was defeated, Kouya left En and took on the name Kenroushin-kun (犬狼真君), a heavenly sage tasked with protecting travelers along the Yellow Sea. He has been waiting for Shouryuu to fulfill his promise of creating a peaceful land where he and Okii-no can live together.
