In the beginning of the series, the only person who has any connection to Sawako's past is her former classmate from middle school named Shino. She is concerned about how well Sawako is adapting to high school life and serves as a sort of mediator between Sawako and other people. Although she may not be considered a close friend, Shino plays an important role in helping Sawako navigate social situations. It was actually Shino who first gave Sawako her nickname.
