The Ropponmatsu unit (Unit 1) is designed as a general-purpose tool for Kabapu and excels at bomb disposal. After failing in her first mission, she receives an additional form (Unit 2), which takes the shape of a perky young cat-girl. In the manga, only one Ropponmatsu unit is active at any given time; this is because there is only one central "core" that is switched between the two bodies. Kabapu claims that the core contains the soul of the princess of Solaria and has had the Ropponmatsu body created to house it as part of his plan to destroy all remaining traces of Solarias technology. In contrast, the anime portrays the Ropponmatsus as two distinct entities who frequently cooperate on important tasks. Although they tend to be destroyed during their missions, Shiouji keeps a lot of spares, which play a significant role in the penultimate episode of the series. Despite their differences, both incarnations of Ropponmatsu often fail in their duties due to either extreme mass (Unit 1) or lack of appropriate functionality (Unit 2).
