In the Deltora Quest series, Lief is a young man who lives near Del's capital with his blacksmith father. Despite not having much time for studying, he enjoys roaming the streets and getting into trouble. On his 16th birthday, his father asks him to find the seven magical gems that were stolen from Deltora's powerful belt, which once protected the country and its chosen hero. Lief leaves Del with Barda shortly after, and soon finds himself in more trouble when he is saved by a lonely girl named Jasmine, who later joins his team. Throughout his journey, Lief faces many temptations but ultimately grows in bravery, strength, wisdom, and patience. He fears being left alone as shown during his time in the shifting sands.
