Tokugawa Shige Shige, also known as Seii Taishōgun, was a powerful leader in Japan during his time. However, after the passing of his father and the Amanto invasion, he struggled to maintain control over the country. As a result, he looked up to Police Chief Matsudaira for guidance and support, seeing him as a sort of mentor or father figure. In several episodes, Shige was seen being led around by Matsudaira to various locations such as cabaret clubs. It was through these experiences that he met Gintoki and the people of the Yorozuya. Despite this, Shige often found himself being harassed by Otae and the girls.
In chapter 524 of the manga and episode 307 of the anime (Gintama° Episode 42), he is injected with a poisonous needle by his childhood friend Tomonosuke, and later dies peacefully on the lap of his sister, Soyo.
