The character of Harlock's first mate on the Arcadia is often depicted as a source of comic relief in the series. However, when an alien threat looms imminent, he stands by Captain Harlock's side. Additionally, this character has a keen interest in mathematics and enjoys constructing plastic model kits of ships. In fact, he was seen building a detailed scale model of the Arcadia in one episode. The inspiration for Yattaran comes from manga artist Kaoru Shintani, who worked with Matsumoto on building models during his early career.
