In the narrative, Kino serves as the main character and is portrayed as approximately 15 years old with short black hair, large eyes, and a fearless demeanor. Typically dressed in a black jacket, brown overcoat, white shirt, goggled cap, and wide belt adorned with numerous pouches, Kino employs specialized equipment depending on the weather or season. Alongside Hermes, the motorrad, Kino and Hermes share a contract: Kino contributes balance while Hermes offers speed, enabling them to traverse any location they desire. Kino is an exceptional marksman with remarkable speed and accuracy, usually armed with two large-caliber pistols. During their travels with Hermes, both individuals strive to remain impartial to the circumstances they encounter and steer clear of interfering in other people's affairs.
It is revealed in episode 4 of the anime and the final chapter of volume 1 of the light novel series that Kino is, indeed, a girl. She took upon the name "Kino" in honor of a traveler with the latter name, who saved her as a child and led her to undertake her current lifestyle. Her actual birth name is left unstated throughout both the show and LN but there are implications in the anime that it is "Sakura."
