Usui is initially portrayed as a strict and demanding individual who has little tolerance for others. He forces Yako and Neuro to leave the crime scene so that the police department can take credit for solving the case. Despite his bossy nature, Usui is also very capable and reliable as a leader, able to motivate the entire force with just a speech. Sasazuka acknowledges Usuis abilities, stating he may not be special but he is not normal either and will likely rise to the top during crises. After the Histerrier case, Usui softens up towards Yako and Neuro, beginning to trust them more. He funds Yakos food during the HAL arc and takes directions from Neuro on Kasais whereabouts. Despite his tough exterior, Usui also has a softer side, enjoying cute things like stuffed animals and flowers. He is known to blush when these topics are brought up. In an omake, it is suggested that a Mini car would be the most suitable for Usui.
