The protagonist in the series is Ao Thurston, who is Renton Thurston and Eureka's 13-year-old biological son. He resembles his father during his younger years but has his mother's hair, eye, and skin color. His mother fell from a clear sky into the bay of Iwato Jima before giving birth to Ao. After Eureka was handed over to the American Armed Forces ten years ago due to the islanders believing their presence angered their local deity with the appearance of Scub Coral, Ao ended up in Toshio Fukai's care. He discovers the RA272 Nirvash after retrieving his mother's bracelet from Gazelle and then getting him to pilot it. The IFO is named Nirvash by Eureka and was created by Renton. Ao, being ostracized by villagers and targeted by the armies of several countries, decides to join Team Pied Piper in hopes of finding his mother. As a human-Coralian hybrid, he possesses psychic insight into secrets and can see Trapar particles with his naked eyes.
