Touma Kusaka

The story revolves around Kusaka, who holds differing views from his clan regarding peace and openness towards foreigners for trade and diplomacy. This is associated with the Open Country movement. While trying to prevent other Choushou clan members from burning down the British Embassy, Kusaka encounters a Bakufu (Shogunate) samurai who assists him in escaping along with his companion Aizawa. Later on, he reconnects with Akizuki, an English teacher, and develops feelings for her. Kusaka possesses a gentle character similar to Akizuki but is more optimistic as he believes that everything will change if they remain patient.
