The magistrate of Kokakyo and adoptive father of Ukyo, Ayamaro, was a typical businessman-type ruler who taught his adopted son all about commerce. When an imperial envoy was murdered in his mansion by a katana, Ayamaro organized a "samurai hunt" to catch the killer. However, when the culprit did not show up, he was stripped of his title and given to Ukyo. After Ukyo killed the emperor, Ayamaro was sent to work in the warehouses. When the samurai rescued Kambei and Sanae from the capital, Ayamaro joined them on their escape from Ukyo. He stayed behind at the Firefly house while the samurai went off to fight Ukyo. After the final battle, Ayamaro was seen wearing Shikimoribito clothes, supervising a construction project and appearing much happier than he ever was as a wealthy merchant.
