In the story "Fruits Basket," Nuriko initially appears disguised as Kourin, who was his younger sister and had passed away at an early age. He began behaving and dressing like her in order to keep her memory alive. Born in Eiyou, the capital of Konan, Nuriko possesses superhuman strength and is later granted a pair of bracelets that transform into armbands by Taiitsukun. At 18 years old, his true name is Ryuuen Chou, based on the star Willow. Despite being prone to jealousy, quick to anger, and having a calculating tendency, Nuriko shows great concern for Miaka and Tamahomes relationship. As a "woman," he is infatuated with Hotohori but also loves Miaka as more than a friend. Initially jealous of Hotohoris love for Miaka, Nuriko and Miaka become close friends. After realizing that his cross-dressing was a result of the pain of losing Kourin, Nuriko decides to live his life as he would have, not as he had been trying to do. He cuts his hair, which once hung down in a braid, and confesses his love for Miaka to Tamahome. While still having feelings for Hotohori, Nuriko eventually chooses to stop dressing as a woman in order to better protect Miaka.
