The individual has a terminal illness which motivates them to join the Nameless. They prefer to pass away on the battlefield rather than in a hospital awaiting their condition to worsen. Kurt, despite being instructed not to sortie, discovers this person's desire for death and persuades Serge to agree that as long as Kurt leads the squad and they require his services, Serge will remain alive, engage in combat, and not succumb to his illness until given permission to do so. With tears streaming down their face, Serge consents to these terms.
