Ryu's best friend is Ken Masters, who is the only son of a wealthy family known as the Masters. They reside in San Francisco in a large mansion that takes 20 minutes to drive from the front yard to the main house. While Ryu spends more time training than Ken, both of them dedicate significant effort to their craft. Unlike Ryu, Ken rides a motorcycle. His mother is Japanese, and later in life, he learns how to harness the power of Hadou while being held captive by Shadowlaw. Only Ryu knows how to execute the Hadoken, but both he and Ken are proficient in using the Shoryuken. Later on, Ken enhances the Shoryuken into the Hadou Shoryuken before shortening it to the Hadou Shoryu. In the English dub, Ken refers to the move as Shoryuken while Ryu calls it Rising Dragon Punch.
