John Thornton eventually becomes the owner of Buck after multiple transactions. Despite owning other animals, Thornton considers all his pets as friends rather than working dogs. He develops a strong bond with Buck, who reciprocates this affection. Tragically, Thornton is killed by some robbers. This act prompts Buck to seek revenge against those responsible.
