Toshizo Hijikata, also known as the Demon of the Shinsengumi, was a stern and unforgiving man who appeared to be ruthless on the outside but had much more depth beneath his serious demeanor. He was the founder of the Shinsengumi, which developed its own unique fighting style called Tennen-Rishin Ryu. In the series, he played a significant role in leading and controlling the group's operations. Although decisions were made by a council consisting of Kondou, Hijikata, and Yamanami, it seemed that Hijikata was in charge. He mentored Okita Souji, an exceptional swordsman known as the tensai, and demonstrated his own skills in combat during episode one.
Later on, Hijikata showed concern for the well-being of both Okita and Tetsunosuke, refusing to let Tetsu hold a sword due to fear that he might follow the same bloody path as Okita. He was deeply committed to the Shinsengumi and took his responsibilities seriously. His stern demeanor likely stemmed from this dedication. Despite being unyielding, Hijikata was not without reason, earning him respect from all 40 members of the Shinsengumi.
