In Super Mario Bros., Goombas are one of the most common enemies encountered by players. These small mushroom-like creatures are part of the Mushroom World and have been a persistent foe for Mario and Luigi ever since their first appearance in that game. They resemble brown mushrooms and belong to the fungus species, along with Toads, Amanitas, Spooks, and Shroobs. Despite being physically weak, Goombas can still pose some threat to adventurers, but a single stomp is usually enough to defeat them. Over time, various powerful sub-species of Goombas have emerged. Originally, the Goombas were allied with the Mushroom Kingdom, but many have since joined forces with Bowser and his Koopa Troop. While most Goombas followed the lead of their king, some chose to become independent thieves or formed peaceful communities.
