In the scene, we witness Setsuko's mother tying a hood on her daughter and urging her to behave while their family prepares for the bombing. The woman then heads towards the shelter, instructing them to meet there as soon as possible. Seita asks his mother if she has her heart medicine with her, to which she responds affirmatively and motions to her bag. She leaves. When Seita and Setsuko arrive at the shelter, they are informed that Seita's mother has been badly injured in the bombing. Distraught, Seita rushes to see her and finds her unconscious on a bed, with severe bandages, burns, and wounds. He pleads for her heart medicine but is told that someone will look into it. When he tries to communicate with his mother, she only responds with soft breathing. Later, when Seita returns to Setsuko, he tells her that their mother has been hurt and is in the hospital but will recover soon. However, afraid to tell the truth, he does not reveal the gruesome details of her condition. We then see Seita's mother's body being loaded onto a truck for cremation as flies and maggots swarm around her corpse. Finally, she is cremated in a massive fire with numerous other bodies.
