The protagonist is a high school teacher and the youngest son of the itoshiki family. he prefers to wear traditional japanese clothing abroad but opts for casual western attire in his hometown. his name written horizontally resembles "zetsubou," which reflects his extremely negative, paranoid, and pessimistic outlook on life. he frequently exclaims "i'm in despair!" and attempts suicide multiple times, although these efforts are not always serious. most of the main female characters seem to have feelings for him due to misunderstandings about what he said to each of them during their introductions. his negative personality developed when he joined a "negative" club in his first year of high school, which was inspired by dazai osamu's no longer human, a novel that both the protagonist and the author greatly enjoy.
