Eco is a traveling bard and scholar, who serves as the main protagonist in the story. He performs songs for people, records history, and teaches others. The reason why he follows Belca is because he wishes to sing his song, which is known as "Belcas Song." Eco first meets Belca when he saves him from being pushed off a cliff by Lagen and helps him recover from serious injuries. He tends to Belca's wounds, feeds him, and hides him from the district soldiers. Later, when Belca tries to reenter the castle with Sana, Eco helps him evade capture by soldiers and cross-dresses along with him.
Eco has a wide network of friends scattered throughout the world. He was once captured by his old friend Dietrich, who betrayed him, but he later escapes with the help of Anette, an old maid. While Eco's past is shrouded in mystery, it seems that he may have some connection to the Lagen family.
