This individual was a powerful teenager who took part in the game and won his freedom prior to the series' events. He wished to return to the game and utilized an SMG and pistol to indiscriminately kill Hiroto Sakurai, Kenzo Sakata, Daizaemon Kaze, and 387 bystanders during daylight hours. As a result, he attracted new participants to Gantz while also bringing himself back into the game. He was eventually killed in a confrontation with Kurono. Despite his incredible swordsmanship skills, Izumi has been portrayed as an arrogant and unfeeling rival who is solely driven by his ambition to be the best Gantz fighter. He has demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice innocent lives in order to achieve this goal (e.g., killing Tae Kojima during one of the missions). When Izumi earned 100 points for the second time, he was given the option of a strong weapon. However, before he could use it, he was attacked by a horde of vampires in front of his apartment. After defeating all of them, the four leaders of the vampire pack targeted him. Izumi managed to kill three of the leaders but was ultimately confronted with the blonde vampire Hikawa. His girlfriend, Ryōko, attempted to save him from Hikawa, but Izumi shielded her with his back and marveled at the number of dead vampires he had defeated. At the conclusion of Phase I, Shion Izumi has not yet been revived.
