Mai Valentine, also known as Mai Kujaku in the manga and Japanese anime, is a character in Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime and manga. Her name translates to "peahen" in English, which is a play on "My Valentine." Initially, Mai is self-centered and only interested in money, satisfaction, and power. She believes she doesn't need friends and sees her Harpie Lady cards as the closest thing to companionship. However, this changes when she meets Yugi Muto and his friends, including Joey. Through their influence, she begins to care more about her friends and the deeper meanings of the game. Later on, Mai's victories become hollow, and her feelings of loneliness return. Despite this, as the series progresses, she regains her self-esteem and pride as a true duelist. In Japanese, Mai typically uses an informal manner of speech, often omitting honorifics when speaking with others but addressing Anzu and Shizuka as "-chan." She employs the contraction "anta," which can be seen as condescending, and uses the personal pronoun "atakushi," a more elegant form of self-reference.
