Keine is both human and beast, with abilities in each form. Her human form allows her to conceal or create histories, while her beast form grants her knowledge of all information during the full moon. Though she usually remains in her human form, this is considered her "true" appearance. When the full moon disappears, Keine experiences a slight discomfort. Despite being a creature from Gensokyo, Keine has always been friendly towards humans and protects them from its youkai inhabitants. She knows everything about the history of Gensokyo.
