In Tales of Symphonia, Emil's parents were killed by Lloyd Irving. Despite being portrayed as a coward, he promised to protect Marta Lualdi, who was carrying the Ratatosk Core. To do this, he formed a contract with Ratatosk, becoming known as the Knight of Ratatosk. This gave him strength to fight against monsters and transformed his appearance. Some people called him a monster due to his increased violence and blood-thirstiness during this phase, which became known as "Ratatosk Mode." His ultimate goal was to help Marta hatch the Centurion Cores and avenge the death of his parents.
