Yoshiyuki Terada serves as a teacher at Tomoeda Elementary School during the series, acting as the home room teacher for the main characters as they progress from fourth grade to fifth grade. He also teaches in other classes and acts as a chaperone on school field trips. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Terada has developed romantic feelings towards one of his students, Rika Sasaki. In the manga, he gives her a ring with the hope that it will eventually become her wedding ring. Rika reciprocates by giving him a teddy bear she made and named after herself, which legend says will allow them to remain in love forever.
However, towards the end of the series, when Sakura is uncertain about her feelings for Li, Terada and Rika are shown having a picnic at a park, with Terada slipping away so that Sakura does not notice him. Despite this, none of the other characters appear to be aware of their relationship. In the anime adaptation, their engagement and more romantic scenes between them are removed, and Rika notes that Terada reminds her of her absentee father. Terada is also shown accepting cakes made by Rika and in accepting the bear and naming it after his "hardest working student."
In the Cardcaptors English dub, Terada is simply called Mr. Terada, and all aspects of the romantic relationship between him and Rika are completely removed, with Rika's shyness and reactions to him made to appear more as a general fear of men than romantic feelings.
