Aizawa, who was previously part of an investigation team under the alias Aihara, left that team but remained in the police force after L gave them the option to quit. Despite leaving the team, he continued to assist them as a member of the police. Following L's death, Aizawa returned to work with Light on the investigation team. After hearing about the supposed falsity of the 13 days rule from written Death Note rules, Aizawa began to suspect that Light might actually be Kira and contacted Near. With information passed from Aizawa, Near was able to deduce Kiras true identity as Light, leading to a brief detention at the SPK headquarters. In the end, Aizawa became the leader of the investigation team. Aizawa has a family with a daughter named Yumi and a wife named Eriko.
