In 2009, Koei Tecmo Holdings was formed through the merger of two companies, Koei and Tecmo. This holding company owns several subsidiaries, including its flagship company, Koei Tecmo Games, which was founded in 1978 as Koei. This company is known for developing and publishing various franchises such as Nobunaga's Ambition, Dynasty Warriors, Atelier, Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Monster Rancher, Fatal Frame, Nioh, Final Fantasy, and Fire Emblem. Initially known as Koei Europe, this subsidiary changed its name to Tecmo Koei Europe in 2010 and released games under this new moniker. In January 2010, Tecmo Inc. and Koei Corporation merged to form Tecmo Koei America Corporation. On April 1, 2010, Tecmo was disbanded in Japan, but its sister company, Koei, survived and was renamed Tecmo Koei Games. This company remains the main subsidiary of the group, with its former development divisions briefly spun-off as separate companies in March 2010 before being folded into Tecmo Koei Games in April 2011. Until 2016, Koei Tecmo Games used both "Koei" and "Tecmo" brand names on new games for marketing purposes.
