Film beats out 1st-day earnings of last year's record-breaking film
On Saturday, Cinema Today announced that Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, which is the 28th film in the franchise, made 1.05 billion yen (approximately US$7.4 million) and sold 690,000 tickets during its first day of release.
In comparison to its predecessor, Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram generated 960 million yen (approximately US$6.26 million) on its opening day in April last year. This film ranked first in its opening weekend with 2,274,333 tickets sold and earned 3,352,494,500 (approximately US$21.7 million) yen in its first three days. As of now, it holds the record for the highest gross in the franchise, surpassing Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine (Iron Submarine) in 2023 with earnings of 13.83 billion yen (approximately US$88.23 million). Furthermore, it was also the top-grossing film in Japan in 2024.
In Japan, "Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback" premiered on Friday with screenings available in IMAX, MX4D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and regular showings. This marks a new record for the franchise with 522 theaters participating. King Gnu sang the theme song "Twilight!!!".
The film takes place in the snowy mountains of Nagano prefecture, and a previous visual depicted Conan on a snowboard. Yamato — an inspector in Nagano with an injured left eye — and Kogoro — a major character whose last major role in a film was back in the ninth movie Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths in 2005 — both appear in the film. Taka'aki and Yui, who are also from Nagano, also appear in the film.
The film was directed by Katsuya Shigehara, who is the unit director for Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine. Takeharu Sakurai wrote the script for this film.
