The movie has special elements such as storyboards and conversations with the director Takahata and film reviewer Roger Ebert.
In North America, home video distribution of the film was handled by Central Park Media, ADV Films, and eventually Sentai Filmworks. Meanwhile, GKIDS obtained the rights for theatrical screenings in this region.
Netflix added the film on September 16.
The movie was inspired by Akiyuki Nosaka's novel "The Little Prince," which is partially autobiographical. It depicts the challenges faced by two siblings during the final stages of World War II.
In 1988, Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli released two films together - Princess Kaguya and My Neighbor Totoro.
