Bandai Namco Entertainment, A24 collaborate on film from Ex Machina, Annihilation director
On Thursday, it was revealed by Bandai Namco Entertainment and film company A24 that they have started working together on a live-action movie adaptation of FromSoftware's Elden Ring game. Alex Garland will direct and write the script for this project, which is set for release in the future. Peter Rice is producing alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, while George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis will also be involved as producers.
In February 2022, Elden Ring was released on multiple platforms including PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. It quickly sold over 12 million units worldwide in March 2022, surpassing Call of Duty: Vanguard as the best-selling game in the U.S. in the last 12 months ending in April 2022. In June 2024, the DLC expansion Shadow of the Erdtree was released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. To play this expansion, you need the base Elden Ring game.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of Dark Souls, Dark Souls III, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, worked with George R.R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones, on developing the game world.
The video game "Elden Ring" has received multiple accolades for its exceptional performance. It was named "Game of the Year" at both The DICE Awards and The Game Awards in 2022. Additionally, it received recognition as "Game of the Year" from The Golden Joystick Awards in 2022. Furthermore, "Elden Ring" was awarded a Grand Prize in December 2022 during the PlayStation Partner Awards. Miyazaki was recognized for his outstanding work on the game with the Nebula Award for Best Game Writing in 2022. In 2024, "The Shadow of the Erdtree" DLC for "Elden Ring" has been nominated for several categories including "Game of the Year," "Best Game Direction," "Best Art Direction," "Best Score and Music," and "Best RPG" at The Game Awards 2024.
On May 30th, Elden Ring: Nightreign will be released as a separate game for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC via Steam. It is a multiplayer co-op PvE game for players to enjoy together.
Garland has worked on several films and projects in different genres. He directed and co-wrote Warfare, which was released on April 11. He is currently working on the upcoming sequel to 28 Years Later, which is set to open on June 20. In addition to his work in films, he was also involved in the story supervision of the DmC: Devil May Cry video game released in 2013.
