Last year's film still ranks above it at #14
The movie "Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback" from the franchise "Detective Conan" has sold more than 9.65 million tickets worldwide, generating over 13.9 billion yen or about US$96.3 million in revenue. This makes it one of Japan's top-performing films with over 19 million tickets sold worldwide.
The movie is currently ahead of Iron Submarine, which is in 20th place with 13.8 billion yen (approximately US$95.6 million). Despite being released last year, Million-dollar Pentagram remains in 14th place with 15.8 billion yen (around US$109.5 million).
In Japan, the movie debuted as number one in cinemas. It generated ¥3,438,626,700 ($24.15 million) in revenue during its first three days, breaking the franchise's previous opening-weekend record.
In Japan, "Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback" premiered on April 18th with screenings available at IMAX, MX4D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and regular cinemas. This marks a new record for the franchise with 522 theaters showing the film. King Gnu sang the theme song "Twilight!!!".
The film takes place in the snowy mountains of Nagano prefecture, and a previous visual depicted Conan on a snowboard. Yamato — an inspector in Nagano with an injured left eye — and Kogoro — a major character whose last major role in a film was back in the ninth movie Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths in 2005 — both appear in the film. Taka'aki and Yui, who are also from Nagano, also appear in the film.
The film was directed by Katsuya Shigehara who is the unit director for Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine . Takeharu Sakurai wrote the script for this film.
In comparison to its predecessor, "Case Closed: The Million Dollar Pentagram," which made approximately US$6.26 million on its opening day in April last year, "Case Closed: The Million Dollar Pentagram" earned significantly more during its first three days of release. Specifically, it sold over 2.2 million tickets and generated around US$21.7 million in revenue during this period.
In Japan in 2024, the top-performing film was Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram, which grossed 15.8 billion yen (approximately US$102 million). This surpassed the earnings of Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine (Iron Submarine) in 2023, which made 13.83 billion yen (around US$88.23 million).
