Image via Amazon In 2016, Takeda started publishing a manga series called "Young Animal" that was written by Masao Hiratsuka. This series ended in April 2021 after releasing 11 volumes. It was nominated for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021 and won an award at the Japan Cartoonist Awards in 2017.
The manga takes place ( link ) In World War II, there was a prolonged conflict fought on the island of Peleliu in Palau between Japan and the United States. This occurred in the summer of 1944. Peleliu was known for its stunning coral reefs and lush forests. Tamaru was a soldier who dreamed of becoming a manga artist. Through his manga, Tamaru depicted his daily life amidst the intense fighting between Japan's roughly 10,000 soldiers and the United States' 50,000 soldiers. The manga explored themes such as what motivated soldiers to fight so far from home on such a small island.
In Young Animal magazine from Hakusensha, there was a spin-off of the manga called "Peleliu Gaiden," which was introduced. ( link ) March 2022. The spinoff is slated to end in the fourth volume around July 2025.
