On Friday, during the Nintendo Direct, it was announced that there will be a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie . This film will be released in April 2026. A trailer was shown in the Direct.
Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination Entertainment, and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo are collaborating on a new film project. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning as directors from the previous film, along with screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Brian Tyler is also returning to compose the soundtrack for this new project.
The actors who will be back in the new version of the movie are Chris Pratt playing Mario, Charlie Day portraying Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy depicting Princess Peach, Jack Black voicing Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key portraying Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson providing the voice for Kamek.
The movie celebrates the 40th year since the start of the Super Mario franchise. Meledandri stated that even though it is based on the Super Mario Galaxy games, it will include elements from every era of Mario.
Super Mario Galaxy was first released for Nintendo Wii in November 2007. Its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, came out for Wii in May 2010.
On March 10th, 2024, it was announced by Nintendo that there will be a new animated movie based on Super Mario Bros., which will be produced by Illumination. Universal Pictures will release this film in the United States as well as other countries on April 3rd, 2026.
In the initial film, apart from Seth Rogen playing Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen portrayed Cranky Kong, while Sebastian Maniscalco voiced Spike. Additionally, Charles Martinet, who has previously lent his voice to numerous Nintendo characters in video games, made appearances in the film as well.
