Disney, WEBTOON agree for Disney to acquire 2% equity stake in WEBTOON Entertainment
On Monday, it was revealed that Disney and Webtoon have reached a preliminary agreement to create a new digital comics platform together.
Disney is launching a new platform that offers over 35,000 comics from its various brands such as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios, as well as WEBTOON Original titles. The platform will support both vertical-scroll and traditional comic formats. WEBTOON Entertainment will develop and manage the platform. Additionally, current Marvel Unlimited subscribers will have access to the new comic collection.
Through the new app, Disney+ subscribers can enjoy a curated selection of titles without any extra cost as part of their Perks program.
Webtoon has announced that all comics on its platform will be accessible worldwide. However, some works have been localized specifically for its Korean and Japanese services.
Furthermore, Disney reached a preliminary agreement with WEBTOON for Disney to purchase a small percentage of equity in WEBTOON Entertainment. This agreement is not legally binding yet and is subject to final contracts and standard closing procedures.
Disney and Webtoon have recently partnered for a multi-year agreement to convert and distribute approximately one hundred comics from Disney, Marvel, 20th Century Studios, and Star Wars in Webtoon's mobile vertical scroll format. This partnership will begin with a special section on the English version of the Webtoon app that will feature both adapted comics and original webcomic series based on popular Disney properties.
