While Mobile Suit Gundam SEED concentrates on the conflict between Earth Alliance, ZAFT, and Orb Union, Astray revolves around three mobile suit prototypes, specifically the Lowe Guele-piloted MBF-P02 Red Frame, the Gai Murakumo-operated MBF-P03 Blue Frame, and the Rondo Ghina Sahaku-controlled MBF-P01 Gold Frame. These suits and their respective pilots exist outside of the main SEED narrative. The Astray series focuses on Lowe's experiences with his Red Frame, Gai's journey with the Blue Frame, and the conflicts involving the Gold Frame, which is initially piloted by Rondo Ghina Sahaku and later by his sister Ronda Mina Sahaku.
