In the not-too-distant future, humans' creative visions give birth to an entirely new realm. These beings that people would refer to as "ghosts" or "monsters" come to be known as "phantoms." The protagonist, Haruhiko Ichijou, is a first-year student at Hosea Academy alongside his senior Mai Kawakami, who wields the power of "Spirit of Five Elements," Reina Izumi, possessing the ability "Phantom Eater," and Koito Minase, who battles phantoms alone. They navigate through the trials and tribulations of high school life until a pivotal event unveils the truth about this world.

Musaigen no Phantom World received an honorable mention in the novel category of the 4th Kyoto Animation Award in 2013.
