In the 22nd Century, the Third World War (2099-2126) has devastated Earth, despite not using nuclear weapons during the conflict. Old nations such as England, France and China have survived but struggle to regain their power. Meanwhile, new nations and organizations like the Sacred Republique of Mumna and Poseidon Organization have emerged from the ruins of war. In this bleak future, we are introduced to Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires, ex-L.A. SWAT members who survived the conflict and now live in a desolate city. They are found by Hitomi, who proposes they follow her to Olympus, an utopian city that has become the world's most powerful organization. In Olympus, Deunan and Briareos are integrated into ESWAT (Extra Special Weapons And Tactics), a prestigious organization tasked with protecting Olympus from terrorist attacks and its global interests. As they encounter various characters and organizations in their quest to protect Olympus, they become entangled in international plots that target the city.

Appleseed was published in English in-print and digitally by Dark Horse Comics from November 7, 2007 to March 11, 2009 and on September 10, 2014, respectively.
