Souta Tawara had stated that he wouldn't inherit his family's udon restaurant in Tokyo after leaving Kagawa Prefecture many years ago. However, following the death of his estranged father, he returns to the place he despised. To his surprise, he finds a scruffy boy sleeping inside one of the cooking pots with flour as a pillow. The boy turns out to be none other than Kagawa's rumored tanuki, a shape-shifting raccoon dog that has lived in the area for many years. Souta decides to take care of him and names him Poko. As he spends more time in Kagawa, memories of his childhood resurface, along with regret over leaving affairs with his father unresolved. Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari is a story about how Poko, through his innocent ways, helps Souta come to terms with his past and their journey toward a new future together.
