Japan is experiencing rapid changes in its global position, with neighboring countries increasing their military capabilities. Additionally, there are concerns about resource extraction on the sea floor, disaster relief efforts, underwater transportation, maintaining order on the high seas, and defending islands. As a result of a near-skirmish with China over the disputed Senkaku Islands, Japan has constructed the Ibuki aircraft carrier as part of its response.

Kuubo Ibuki won the 63rd Shogakukan Manga Award in 2017 with Koi wa Ameagari no You ni. The series was adapted to a live action movie which was released on May 24, 2019.
