In Japan, under the cloak of nightfall, a masked assassin brutally slays six individuals in various cities - three in Tokyo, one in Osaka, and the last in Kyoto. These victims were all members of Genjibotaru, a notorious criminal organization that specialized in stealing Buddhist artifacts and statues. Despite having no clear motive or leads on other members' identities, the investigation stalls until a Kyoto temple contacts Kogorou Mouri for help in recovering their stolen statue. An anonymous letter containing a perplexing puzzle arrives at the temple, prompting the monks to seek Mouri's assistance. Meanwhile, Conan Edogawa and high school detective Heiji Hattori collaborate on solving this enigma while Hattori searches for his childhood love. Using Hattori's knowledge of Kyoto, they gradually uncover the truth but not before the assassin strikes again, killing another Genjibotaru member and attempting repeatedly on Hattori's life. Eventually, they manage to rescue Hattori's childhood sweetheart by working together to bring forth hidden evidence that can put an end to the rogue assassin's bloodshed and save Hattori's love.
