Yuuta Okkotsu is plagued by a vengeful ghost after the death of his childhood friend Rika in a traffic accident. Instead of appearing as the sweet girl he once knew, she manifests as a powerful and monstrous entity who fiercely protects him. Despite being unable to control her violent behavior, Yuuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed that follows from her brutal vengeance. When apprehended by Jujutsu sorcerers-secret guardians trained to combat forces like Rika-Yuuta wishes for isolation to prevent further harm. However, his captor, master sorcerer Satoru Gojou, has different plans: he will enroll Yuuta at Jujutsu High School and teach him how to control Rika in order to help people. As a first-year student, Yuuta learns Jujutsu arts and combat malignant beings alongside his classmates Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda. Through his training, Yuuta begins to feel comfortable with his abilities and finds his place in the world. However, as he progresses, Yuuta discovers that the dangers of the Jujutsu realm extend beyond malevolent spirits.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Toritsu Jujutsu Koutou Senmon Gakkou is the prototype serialization of Jujutsu Kaisen. The story remains canon to the main series and it features a different central cast. Character designs used in this prototype were later altered in the main series; for instance, Toge Inumakis initial design was later used for Jujutsu Kaisens main protagonist Yuuji Itadori, while Toge underwent a redesign.
