After defeating the Demon King, the winning group of heroes - mage Frieren, warrior Eisen, priest Heiter, and hero Himmel - return home before dissolving their team. However, elves age differently than humans, so Frieren observes her companions passing away one by one over time. Before his death, Heiter assigns a young human apprentice named Fern to Frieren in hopes that her passion for collecting various magic spells will drive them on a seemingly random journey together. During their travels, Frieren reflects on missed chances to develop closer relationships with her deceased teammates.
Sousou no Frieren has been published in English as Frieren: Beyond Journey's End by VIZ Media under the Shonen Sunday imprint since November 9, 2021. The series has also been simulpub through VIZ Manga.The series won the New Work Prize at the 25th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize awards in 2021, and was one of the winners of the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award. It also won the 48th Kodansha Manga Award in the shounen category in 2024.
