Helena marries Viscount Carleton, whom she has always admired. However, her spouse believes that their union was solely for financial gain and refuses to share his emotions with her. He even goes as far as claiming that their child is not his offspring and departs for war. Following this event, Helena's life becomes unbearable. Her in-laws treat her disrespectfully, cut her off financially. Seven years later, while she has been devotedly nurturing her son, her husband unexpectedly returns, destitute and near collapse.
