In the near future, we meet Takurou, a middle-aged man who feels unfulfilled in his life and job. He struggles with low self-esteem and lets himself go, becoming overweight, unhappy, and lonely. His only source of joy is visiting brothels where he can indulge in occasional sexual encounters. However, one day, through a friend, Takurou discovers the virtual reality world of "The Unreal." For a pricey investment of $6000+ in equipment, he purchases a virtual girlfriend named Tsukiko who is programmed to only think about him. Despite her initial appeal, Takurou soon realizes that she comes with some flaws.
