For over 40 years, Golgo 13 has been renowned as the world's top assassin for hire, fulfilling various missions such as settling private scores or altering history. Despite this, little is known about his true identity or nationality. However, one thing remains certain - Golgo 13 always completes his assignments successfully and never encounters his clients again, unless they attempt to betray him.

Golgo 13 is the oldest manga still in publication and has the third highest volume count (under the Dokaben series and Kochikame). The series is also the fourth best-selling manga, having sold over 200 million copies.The series was published in English by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint and 13 volumes were published from February 21, 2006 to February 19, 2008. These volumes are a compilation of stories picked from the forty-year history of the manga, and each ends with an editorial commentary about Golgo 13 as a cultural phenomenon in Japan. Glénat published the series in French in two compilation books titled Best 13 of Golgo 13. Each book collected 13 stories from the mangas history with the first book being readers choice (April 26, 2006) and the second being the authors choice (February 13, 2008).
