Shizuku Mizutani is an individual who prioritizes their own success over forming connections with classmates. This changes when they are coerced into providing notes to the delinquent, Yoshida Haru, who had dropped out of school following a physical confrontation that led to his suspension. Initially harsh, Haru eventually convinces Shizuku that they share a bond, even expressing romantic feelings towards her. Over time, Shizuku discovers the softer side of Haru, revealing his compassionate and truthful character.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun was published in English as My Little Monster by Kodansha Comics USA from March 11, 2014 to March 29, 2016. It has also been published in Polish by Studio JG since November 9, 2015, in Russian since August 12, 2016, and in Spanish as El monstruo de al lado by Norma Editorial since October 2016.
