Rio is a 14-year-old boy who loves books and is considered awkward by his peers. He has a twin brother, Mao, who is popular and plans to have a big family. Despite their differences, the brothers are close. One day, while trying to retrieve a cat from the street, Rio is hit by a car in front of his brother's eyes. In the darkness after the accident, he is given the choice between living or dying. Rio chooses to live and wakes up in a new world filled with foreigners and strange animals that he has never seen before. To his surprise, he now has the form of a black cat, which is revered in this world as familiars of wizards.
