William Twining is a top student at Stratford Schools despite attending a religious school. He does not believe in God or the supernatural because he is an emphatic realist and supports modern science. Although the Twinings are one of Britain's most prestigious noble families, William's missing uncle accumulated debt. One day, desperate to find something valuable to sell to pay this debt, he stumbled upon a secret room in his manor where a stranger appeared. This intruder introduced himself as Dantalion, Grand Duke of Hell, and claimed that William was the "elector" who could choose the representative Emperor of Hell. However, since William did not believe in Heaven or Hell, he denounced Dantalion as a fraud and declined to support his candidacy for Emperor. Despite this, Dantalion refused to take no for an answer and enrolled at Stratford as "Dantalion Huber" to stay near the elector and convince him. To fend off this unwelcome hanger-on and others that were sure to follow, William could try setting boundaries with Dantalion and making it clear that he does not want any interference in his life or beliefs. He could also seek support from school authorities or family members if necessary.
